Samuel Boyle

Visiting Researcher

Samuel Boyle is pursuing his PhD at the NTNU SmallSat Lab, within the Department of Electronic Systems at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. His research and publications focus on onboard hyperspectral image processing for small satellites, contributing to the active HYPSO-1 and HYPSO-2 CubeSat missions, including adapting algorithms and machine learning to compute more efficiently onboard satellites. As part of his PhD, he has designed FPGA accelerators for edge processing onboard satellites, spanning compression and machine learning, and has supervised MSc students working on related topics.

From September 2026, he will undertake a visiting researcher stay at ESA Φ-lab, ESRIN, funded by The Research Council of Norway mobility grant. There, he will build on his PhD work, investigating the suitability of Binary Neural Networks as a method to deliver efficient onboard AI across a diverse range of processing platforms for satellite missions.
